I think I accidentally witnessed something I wasn’t supposed to

This happened about two weeks ago and I still don’t really know what to make of it.

I work late shifts, so I usually get home around 1–2 AM. My apartment building is pretty quiet at that hour—mostly families and a couple of older people. Nothing ever really happens here.

That night, I remember it was unusually cold. Like, the kind of cold where the air feels “empty” when you breathe. I parked my car and noticed a light on in the building across from mine. Not strange by itself, but it was flickering slightly, like a bad bulb.

As I got closer to my entrance, I heard something metallic hit the ground. Not loud, but sharp enough to stand out in the silence.

I turned around and saw a guy standing near the dumpsters.

At first I thought he was just taking out trash, but he wasn’t moving. Just standing there. Facing the building. Not even looking at me.

I did that awkward half-nod people do, but he didn’t react at all. No nod back, nothing.

That’s when I noticed the bag near his feet.

It wasn’t tied. And it definitely wasn’t garbage.

It looked… packed. Too neatly. Like clothes or something solid, not random trash. And there was something metallic partially sticking out of it—maybe what made that noise earlier.

I suddenly felt like I shouldn’t be there.

I don’t know why. Nothing actually happened. But my brain just flipped into that “leave now” mode.

So I turned, unlocked the building door, and went inside without looking back. I didn’t even wait for the elevator—I took the stairs.

Here’s the part that’s been messing with me.

My apartment faces the parking lot. Out of curiosity (and yeah, maybe a bit of paranoia), I looked out the window about a minute later.

The guy was gone.

Not walking away. Not getting into a car. Just… gone.

The bag too.

I stood there for a while trying to spot him somewhere nearby, but there was nothing. Just empty pavement and that flickering light from the other building.

The next morning, I checked the area before leaving for work. No bag. No signs of anything unusual.

I even asked my neighbor if they’d heard or seen anything weird that night. They hadn’t.

I keep telling myself it was probably nothing. Someone taking stuff out, maybe moving things around late at night.

But I can’t shake how still he was. Or how fast he disappeared.

And the weirdest part?

I’ve lived here for three years. I’ve never seen that guy before.
